This Monday I am introducing a new series to my blog: Movie Monday. I will write at least one Movie Monday each month. I will start the series with a cinema special, since the last few weeks, I’ve been to the cinema three times. Ruud and I seem to have found a new hobby. We watched the movie hype Minions, the animation movie Inside Out and the sci-fi action adventure Jurassic World.

Minions (3D)
(Seen on July 22, 2015)

Like I said, this movie has been hyped beyond imagination. Minions are everywhere. You can’t walk into a store without finding some Minions pencils, Minions stickers or Minions wrapping paper. Do we really need a whole movie about these creatures? Aren’t we sick of them by now?

No! Because Minions are cute! And not only that, they’re hilarious! I was really looking forward to see a movie in which the Minions would not be the sidekicks, but the movie stars themselves.

The movie is actually the prequel to Despicable Me. It shows the Minions’ journey to their ultimate evil master. Because if they cannot serve an evil villain, they’ll go depressed. Three Minions are traveling the world to find their true master. Of course, their journey is not going flawlessly.

Obviously I did not expect to see a beautiful, in-depth story line, because hey… We’re talking about Minions here. These are simple creatures, living to serve the evil and to make fun of each other in the process. As a result of this, the movie contained a lot of easy jokes. They were totally hilarious though.

One thing I think is very well thought of in particular is their language. At first it may seem gibberish without any sense, but the Minion’s language actually is a mixture of English, Spanish, French and German. I might even have missed a language here. I may be a total nerd here, but I think it’s cool that so much thought is put into such a thing and a complete new language is created as a result.

What I so love about the tiny yellow pill shaped creatures, is their super short attention span and their emotional roller coaster that comes with it. They can fight one second, make fun of each other the next and be scared the second after that. This results in not one boring moment throughout the movie.

This is the perfect feel-good animation movie if you just need to unwind. If you haven’t seen it, please do! Oh, and I think it doesn’t matter too much if you’ll watch it in 3D or not. It will probably be slightly cooler in 3D, but you won’t miss out on much if you’ll just watch the 2D version, I guess.

Inside Out (3D)
(Seen on August 1, 2015)

Have you ever wondered what’s going on inside someone’s head? You don’t have to anymore, because Inside Out shows it all. Apparently we’ve all got five tiny people inside our head: Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear and Disgust. These tiny little people control everything you do. But this control room is just a tiny spot in your brain. There’s so much more. Like Core Memory Islands, the Thought Train and the Abyss of the Subconscious. The five emotions normally work perfectly together to create nice memories for the person they’re controlling. But what happens if a big life event changes your whole world and Joy and Sadness are currently unavailable?

I loved the plot. At one point in our life we have all experienced a lack of joy. Although this movie takes it a little bit further. Since the main character Riley also has lost the ability to feel sad, she seems to go numb to the world around her.

In the meanwhile, we see Joy and Sadness working really hard inside her head to be able to let her feel happiness again. This is so well done. We see how a person can alter or even break down their own memories, how the subconscious takes part in all of this and how important each and every single emotion is. We see the inner struggle of a person who seems to loses her connection to the world and to herself.

This movie really touched me. I could relate to so many things. Even though the way Riley’s head is depicted is top level fantasy, it really is spot on to how it actually is at the same time. It’s not all that serious though. The movie has so many funny parts and hilarious jokes as well. It’s balanced out really well.

But maybe the most admirable thing of the movie: it’s totally suitable and enjoyable for both children and adults. Children will see the beautiful world inside Riley’s head and laugh at all the jokes and the adults (or older kids) will get the deeper meaning behind it all. This is the most brilliant movie I’ve seen in a long time (Harry Potter not included). It’s a total must-see.

I think the 3D effect will add to the mesmerizing effect of the world. So if you can see it in 3D, do it!

Jurassic World
(Seen on August 9, 2015)

Now, if there was any movie I was really looking forward to seeing in 3D, it was this one. I mean, a world full of Dinosaurs, how cool would it be to feel part of that world? However, after we paid for our tickets, we found out we had gone to the 2D version. For a moment I was seriously considering returning the tickets and come back another time, but I had been so looking forward to see this movie. And it’s in the cinemas for quite a while now, so I really wanted to see it before it was too late. So 2D it was.

Jurassic World is a huge theme park full of Dinosaurs which are created in a lab. Two brothers are having the time of their lives visiting all the different species in the park. Until a huge genetically modified dinosaur breaks out of its cage. No-one knows exactly what this dinosaur is capable of. It turns out to be a highly intelligent brutal murder machine. The two boys are running for their lives.

If you’re about the same age as me or older, you’ll probably remember vividly when Jurassic Park first played in the cinemas. A sequel, so many years later can go both ways; it either makes or breaks the entire series. Well, this one totally made it!

The movie even had some references to Jurassic Park. One of the co-workers was wearing a Jurassic Park t-shirt, there was a storage room containing old cars and equipment from the Jurassic Park era and then there was the theme song. Oh, the theme song… They hadn’t changed it! It was so nostalgic, I cannot believe it. I was thrown back 20 years ago in an instant and it was awesome.

Not only the music was great though, the entire movie was. The world and the dinosaurs looked so awesome and real. The actors were all really great and I loved the story. It had some flaws or loose ends in my opinion, especially near the end. Also the clicker training was really inaccurate compared to real clicker training. This is a pity, because it’s something that can easily be checked and done properly. But all in all it didn’t bother me too much.

What did bother me though was not wearing 3D glasses. Oh, how I would have loved to see this movie in 3D. I know for a fact the whole experience would have been ten times better that way. Who knows, I might even go to the cinema a second time to get the full experience. I don’t know. I’m not a big fan of seeing the same story twice in a row, but man, I missed out on a lot here!

So please go watch this movie but please, please go watch it in 3D!

These three movies bring my total to 25 movies watched, which means I’m at 25% of my goal! So I’m progressing really well in this department, but I also still have a long time to go. Which movie would you recommend me to go see in the cinema next?
